It features small, white, pea-like flowers (to 1\/2” long) in erect racemes (to 12”) atop dark flower stems extending well above a foliage mound of clover-like, trifoliate, bluish-green leaves (leaflets to 2” long). Blooms in spring. Flowers give way to inflated seed pods (to 1 3\/4” long) which turn brown to black when ripe and have considerable ornamental interest. Stems with seed pods are valued additions to dried flower arrangements.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ePlanting Instructions:\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSince this plant does not transplant well, it should be direct sown. The seed will need to be scarified; to accomplish this, pour 150 degrees F water over the seed and let it soak overnight the day before planting. In late fall, plant 2-3 seeds per plant, 1\/8\" deep, spaced 24-36\" apart. For spring planting, the scarified seed will need to be mixed with moist sand and stored in the refrigerator for 10 days before planting.
